RIO DE JANEIRO – Gunfire erupted Thursday in a Rio de Janeiro slum, killing at least seven suspected drug traffickers and a policeman a day before Carnival celebrations kick off.

A police spokesman said the gunbattle in the Jacarezinho slum started while police were on a routine patrol. He declined to be quoted by name, citing standard department policy.

Jacarezinho is located in northern Rio, far from the tourist areas and the Carnival parties that open Friday and draw about 500,000 visitors each year.

But the violence nevertheless adds to concerns about the city’s image and how much it will be able to curtail violence as it prepares to host the 2016 Olympics.

Thursday was one of the bloodiest days in Rio since October, when a drug gang war saw police kill scores of suspects during two weeks of operations. That violence was ignited when a police helicopter was shot down by suspected traffickers, and 2,000 officers began raiding slums to look for those responsible.

Rio’s aggressive policing has been criticized by the United Nations and human rights groups, who say police here kill three people each day on average.

Officials defend their tactics, saying they are going up against gangs armed with assault rifles, grenades and even anti-aircraft weapons.

Also Thursday, police found the body of the co-founder of a local non-governmental organization that offers slum youth theater training. Fred Pinheiro, whose throat was slit, had been missing for two days.

Police said there was no known motive and no suspects were in custody.

WASHINGTON – Citigroup Inc. plans to let homeowners on the verge of foreclosure stay in their homes for six months — if they turn over the deed to their property.

Citi said Thursday it is launching the pilot program, dubbed “Foreclosure Alternatives,” this week in Texas, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey and Ohio. Initially, about 1,000 homeowners are expected to participate. Citi may expand the program nationwide.

In a normal foreclosure, a lender assumes legal control of the property and evicts the homeowner. But Citi’s program, like other “deed in lieu of foreclosure” efforts, allows the homeowner to avoid a completed foreclosure. While the owner must still leave the home after six months, the program results in a less severe hit to the borrower’s credit score.

The policy is an attempt to deal with what lenders see as a growing phenomenon: borrowers who choose to default on their mortgages. Close to one in every three U.S. homeowners owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth, according to Moody’s Economy.com.

Many housing analysts say these borrowers — particularly those who owe at least 20 percent more than their home’s current value — are choosing to walk away because they see little chance that home prices will come back.

Also, many states have lengthened the time it takes to complete a foreclosure, making the process more time-consuming and expensive for the lending industry.

“Why should we all go through the foreclosure process and evict people?” said Sanjiv Das, Citi’s top mortgage executive. Avoiding foreclosure, Das said, is “less painful for our borrowers as well as for us.”

Borrowers in Citi’s program will still need to pay their utility bills. But Citi will pay at least $1,000 in relocation costs and will consider helping out with other expenses. Citi also plans to provide relocation counseling.

The program is intended to help borrowers who don’t qualify for a mortgage modification or a short sale — one in which the lender agrees to sell a home for less than the total mortgage amount.

Citi’s policy is similar to one announced in November by Fannie Mae, the government-controlled mortgage finance company. Fannie is allowing homeowners to hand back the deed to their properties, then rent them back at market rates.

Former world champion boxer Evander Holyfield has been reaching out to his third wife Candi though she has filed a temporary protective order against him, a source revealed to RadarOnline.com exclusively. Despite the effort, she still wants a divorce according to the source.

The famous boxer allegedly hit his wife in the face during an early morning fight on February 1, which was sparked after she complained that it was too cold inside their huge $10 million Georgia mansion.

“He told me that I was only thinking about myself,” Candi Holyfield stated. “He started telling me that I needed to start putting God first in my life.”

The source also revealed that Holyfield was informed about the order through a call from his managers.

“Evander was in Las Vegas and is due to fly back to Georgia early today,” the source said. “It came as a total shock to him that Candi had filed the order.

“As soon as he heard about it he contacted her by telephone and told her that he wanted to try and save their marriage and that he would go to counseling with her.”

The last-minute efforts may not make a difference however.

“[Candi] is still making arrangements to move out of the mansion and his managers have told him to stay away from her or he could be held in contempt of court.

“They are all hoping that she will cool off and that they can stay together because the truth is that he cannot afford another divorce right now.”

Candi was at the Georgia mansion Wednesday night but it is not known if she is still living there or was simply getting together some of her possessions.

Holyfield has been violent to Candi before according to her claims in the order request.

“In 2008 he choked me in front of our daughter and house keeper. In 2009 he has hit me in front of the children. He has grabbed me in front of the children. A couple of weeks ago he threw a bottle of water at me.”

Ray Carruth has to be the most heartless & dumbest MOFO in the world for doing this! Amazing how such a tragedy can have such a beautiful ending! This story really touched me…I tell ya, ain’t nothing like a Black Mama!

According to our friend in the head ATLien, celebrity attorney Phaedra Parks has secured a highly coveted spot on The Real Housewives of Atlanta cast. Applaud, boo, or Kanye shrug wherever you see fit.

Parks, who clients include Jermaine Dupri and Bobby Brown, also served as a producer of last year’s instant grits of a reality show Tiny & Toya. If you recall she gave Wayne’s ex-wife a crash course on how to properly present herself in a business meeting. I just got some news that made me run to my dayum laptop! It’s been speculated for a while now, but I just got word from a SOLID source that Attorney Phaedra Parks will be joining the cast of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta!

I was sworn to secrecy but y’all already know I can’t keep a dayum secret! I even tried to get Phaedra to confirm but she’s being all tight lipped about it. I called her last night and although she wouldn’t confirm or deny…her reaction to my question was confirmation enough.

Next month, the Academy Award nominated actress will headline the ‘Spread the Love’ comedy tour. And, she’s ready to take a break from her BET late-night show and the award show circuit to really connect with her fans.

“On this tour people can expect the kind of laughter that makes the bottom of their stomach hurt,” the former ‘Parkers’ star said. The 42 year-old Baltimore native added, “And the type of love you’ll never forget.”
